Dear friends,
I’m asking for any and all advice that you can give. This has been a rough week with Xander.
I rescued Xander last spring/summer and was told he was great with other dogs. He seemed fine with Izzy for the first couple of days that I had him but would get really aggressive during play. They would rough-house like normal dogs but then he’d take it to another level and act like he wanted to kill her. Frantic, I contacted his foster about this and she said he never did anything like this with her dogs.
This behavior scared me to death and when it would happen, Izzy would also be scared.
These incidents decreased with time but didn’t disappear entirely. One time this past November, their playing got out of hand (Xander taking it to that other level) and he really hurt her. She had wounds all over her and was limping for two weeks.
Since that time, this may have happened once or twice. Until this week. It’s happened twice just this week. The first time was over food- which he’s NEVER done. And then just now, out of no where (they weren’t even playing), he did it again and it scared her so much that she pooped herself. Thankfully, she did not get injured. I had to throw myself on top of him (he was on top of her) and pry him away from her. He’s now in his kennel.
If it’s not over a toy or food, I don’t understand what triggers this behavior. And even when it does happen over toy or food, what can I do to prevent this?
I’m in tears over this. My poor Izzy! She’s scared and I don’t blame her. When he gets like this, it freaks me out as well! But I have to be Izzy’s protector and I have to show Xander that I’M alpha dog. Can you guys give me some advice? Tips? Lessons? Training? This can’t be happening.
So concerned,
Juli

My dogs are very fortunate to be in a loving home, have food, water and more toys than they know what to do with. They get walks, play-dates and lots of car rides. But I’m really the lucky one. They have given me more than I can ever express. Their love is like no other.
There are many dogs out there living in shelters who long for a home to call their own. The joy they bring is indescribable. Consider opening your heart and home to a dog. You’ll never be the same person again. You’ll be better. You’ll be a much better person.

I love hearing about young volunteers! So when I read about this young girl, I just had to share with my followers.
Mikala is a junior volunteer with the French Bulldog Rescue Network. She welcomes each new Frenchie into rescue with handmade, decorative collars. They are adorable! She’s a beautiful girl doing a beautiful thing for dogs without permanent homes. GREAT JOB, MIKALA! You’re a role model! Keep up the fantastic work! Here’s what the FBRN had to say on their website about her:
As we know, when you look good, you feel good, and since earlier this summer, thanks to a generous and creative Junior Volunteer, each of our new fosters gets a little boost shortly after they arrive.
Ten-year-old Mikala takes the time to sew a pretty floral collar attachment for each girl Frenchie, and makes each boy a Dapper Dan by sending along a bow tie. She chooses the fabric, gems, feathers and notions for each collar. She learned to sew while making the collars for our fosters.
Mikala thought of making these fashion collars while visiting her aunt, who also volunteers for FBRN.
Mikala has a keen interest in fashion, and she designs all the collar accessories herself. She gets a little help with the packaging and mailing, but she makes sure each package contains a note from her welcoming each new Frenchie to FBRN.
You can see photos of Lemon in his bow tie, and Dorothy and Tootsie Lou showing off their beautiful flowers.
If you have a child who might be interested in becoming a Junior Volunteer, please get in touch with our Junior Volunteer coordinator.
We all think Mikala is very talented, and we are so happy she spends some of her time making foster Frenchies look good! It’s great to see the next generation of volunteers get involved and learn how much fun it can be to help others. Many of our foster and available dogs have photos of the fosters wearing Mikala’s handiwork, and you can see the collars on their pages.
Thank you, Mikala! And thank you to all our donors, friends, and sponsors for doing what you can to help our Frenchies.
She bends over and you can see all the way to France! Your skirt is too short, Izzy! Put on some tights- you aren’t leaving the house looking like that!

Put on some tights, Iz! Your skirt is too short!
A little chilly out this morning but we hit the dog park for some much needed exercise! I think the smiles on these faces say it all- we had a blast!!

There were only two other dogs on the small dog side with us, Guppie, a poodle mix (golden doodle?), and Sugar, a puggle with a hint of dachsund in her. Izzy did the usual- held on tight to her frisbee and enjoyed having Sugar chase her.

Izzy, frisbee and Sugar.

Xander isn’t as playful at the dog park as Izzy. I think he feels like he’s stuck sitting at the kids table at dinner or something because he wants to go on the big dog side of the park so badly! He always runs along the fence in between the small dog side and the big dog side. He tries jumping it too (have to admit, he’s a good jumper but he’s going to need a boost from someone to make it over). So getting photos of him isn’t as easy- they are mostly of his back. Here are a couple that I was able to get though:

X on the fly!
The weather is starting to get cooler so our days are numbered at the dog park. We’ll take advantage of every minute we can until it’s just too cold for our paws!

One thing that always has me concerned are the thoughts in Xander’s head. As a little guy who’s had more than one owner, is he always worried that he will be left again?
I don’t know much about his life before I rescued him in Spring 2012. I was told that he was surrendered by his owner because they lived in an apartment and he barked a lot. That’s all I was told. His bio on the rescue website appealed to me because he seemed like he’d be compatible with Izzy. And of course there were photos of him- those big brown eyes swallowed my heart up in one gulp!
During my phone interview I was told that he was deaf. That made me nervous but I figured that many other hearing humans have adopted deaf dogs, why can’t I? Plus I know sign language so I can teach him sign so that we can communicate better.
Then during my home visit, I was told he had an inverted tail.
So that’s when I realized that his owners probably weren’t able to communicate with him and that’s why he barked so much- he was frustrated. And maybe the inverted tail was a pain to clean and keep on top of and the owner decided to give him up.
My poor guy was so misunderstood! Or at least I think he was. He’s NOT deaf. He might be hearing impaired but I’m not even sure about that. And he doesn’t have an inverted tail either.
Xander is the sweetest guy ever. He’s also extremely mellow. Like, big time. He prefers to cuddle over anything else. No wait, I take that back- he loves food. I mean, he really loves food! Food, then cuddles! And he’s not a barker at all. It took quite awhile before I even heard him bark and it’s not even a full bark. It’s this low gruff noise. It’s very adorable and I welcome hearing it!
I had to kennel train him and he barked in the beginning but for less than five minutes after going into it. Then he’d sleep the rest of the time.
His eyes make me worry. They are so big- I feel like I can see right into them and read his thoughts on his brain. They make him look sad. I can’t help but wonder if he’s always worried that I might leave him like his first owner did. I verbally tell him that I will never, ever leave him and that he doesn’t have to worry. And I won’t leave him. Ever. I mean that. My home and my arms are his, forever. I’ll never let him go. But how do I earn that trust with him? Or have I already and I just don’t know it?
My Xan-man, you aren’t going anywhere without me! With me you have love and safety. Forever.
-Juli

READER ALERT: The photos and products you are about too see are so stinkin’ cute that you might smile ear to ear! -Juli
These are soooo cute and they keep your pooch comfortable and cool in warm/hot weather! Not only that, but they are totally affordable and then a good chunk of each purchase goes to the Western Idaho Pug Rescue! How cool is THAT?! DOUBLE COOL!! (Get it? The collars make you cool and then it’s cool to support the Pug rescue? Ok, I thought it was clever of me.)
Here are some photos of Izzy and Xander with their cooling collar! I know I’m biased and all but, aren’t they cute??!?! LOVE the pattern! You can look stinkin’ cute like Izzy and Xander too- get yours online at kiddothepug etsy shop!

Friends and dog lovers,
This is Stitch, a male French Bulldogwho is living the great life with a great family.

Stitch
But he hasn’t always been so lucky. And on June 7, 2012, A California judge will decide if Stitch will remain in a loving and safe home or if he will be returned to a life of neglect and mistreatment.
Bottom line: they need us. Stitch and his family need us to stand up for them and this is how we can do it:

Here’s the story on Stitch from his human Mom:
“Three years ago, we adopted a sweet little dog named Stitch. The woman who owned him told us his sad story. Stitch had been passed around to several people in his first year of life – a group of young kids who were part of the Hollywood club scene. The woman’s teenage daughter had ended up with Stitch, but the girl was wild and out of control, partying, disappearing for weeks at a time with her adult boyfriend.
Stitch had been locked in the teen’s room for days without sunshine or exercise, having to relieve himself on the carpet. The daughter had taken him to a wild party where he had become so distressed that he jumped through a pane glass window to escape. And eventually, in their care, the dog ended up abandoned in the middle of a highway 10 hours away in Nevada City. With a cigarette burn on his neck.
We wanted to give Stitch a stable, happy home. We adopted him, microchipped and licensed him and got his necessary shots. And then we fell completely in love with him.
Soon after, the teenage daughter’s adult boyfriend began calling our home, harassing us, telling us the dog was his and to return Stitch to him. He even filed a police report against us for theft. After much drama – too much to recount here, the boyfriend sued us last year for more than $25,000, accusing us of theft and intentional infliction of emotional distress on HIM.
Although this man has no legal documentation or paperwork of any kind linking him to Stitch, and we have all the legal paperwork and proof, we’ve still had to defend ourselves in court. For the past two years we have been fighting this with our attorney, specialist in animal rights, Jill Ryther. It has drained our finances, and maxed out our credit.
In June of last year, the unthinkable happened. WE LOST THE TRIAL. THE JUDGE RULED BASED ON LOST PROPERTY STATUTE, equating Stitch to a bicycle. It doesn’t matter if an owner neglects or abandons an animal. It states that no matter how the owner treated the “property”, it has to be returned to the original owner. OUR STITCH IS NOT A BICYCLE! For the full story click HERE.
WE IMMEDIATELY APPEALED. We also filed a petition for Stitch to stay with us during the appeals process.
In November of last year, after a six month court battle, we were given the right to keep Stitch in our custody temporarily during the appeals process. Here’s the story. While we are in the third year of this fight, Stitch is a happy, healthy little guy who hikes daily, goes with us to tee ball games and is adored by all the neighborhood kids.
On June 7th, 2012 the appeals judge will decide whether Stitch says with us, or goes back to the guy who lost him FIVE TIMES, the guy who waited days before even looking for Stitch because he “figured he’d turn up: (his words in court). Of the original group of kids who once owned Stitch, two have been in rehab, and one died of a drug overdose.
All we want is for Stitch to have a safe life where he is loved and cared for. We know he belongs with us.
Our appeals hearing is set for JUNE 7th,2012 1:00pm, in downtown Los Angeles appeals court. This is our opportunity to show the courts that we are invested in OVERTURNING this law which considers our pets nothing more than property- like a bicycle or a stereo, with no regard for safety and wellbeing. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD in all your animal communities. If tons of people show up to this hearing, and we get media attention, the court will see that this is a matter of public concern. HELP US SAVE OUR STITCH- and in return, the law may save your pets one day.
Please pray and think good thoughts for us!
THANK YOU!
Troy and Hollye”
If this story doesn’t make you livid then you are dead inside! Stitch and his family don’t stand a chance without our help. So I BEG each of you to PLEASE TAKE ACTION! Please do each of the above 4 steps NOW!
In order to pay off the debt that the family has accumulated from spending thousands of dollars on legal bills, Stitch and his family are selling pretty much everything they can. If you are able to make a contribution to help them, please do so here. 100% of your purchase will go towards Stitch’s legal fund. If you’d like to simply make a donation without a purchase, I know they would be thrilled! You can donate here.
Thank you in advance for taking a stand for Stitch!!! -Juli

Looks like a nice game of tug-o-war, right? Riiiiiight.

A little open-mouth, clanging of teeth.

Izzy might be on her back in this next photo but she wears the pants- she can take Xander DOWN!

I love the look on Xander’s face below!

“Let’s play on Mama and scare the crap out of her!”

Now I see what looks like the arm of a pterodactyl.

Paw.

Imagine how perfect this next photo would be if they were to LOOK at the camera!! #disappointed

They keep me on my toes- no doubt about it. Those low-key, easy nights with Izzy are LONG GONE!

I’m thankful that Izzy is CREAM because it makes it a bit easier to find those damn ticks on her!

Cream hair color makes looking for fleas and ticks a tad easier!
Izzy’s two years old and quite the active girl, a socialite of sorts. So she goes to doggy daycare, goes to the dog park and anywhere else I go. In the two years that I’ve had her, I’ve never seen a tick on her- EXCEPT NOW. And I’m mad as heck!
A couple of weeks ago while Izzy and I were out walking, I noticed a bug on her right butt-cheek. Upon closer inspection I realized it was a TICK! Being the over-reactor that I am, I screamed out loud and panicked. Where’s a paramedic when you need one?
I did what any other mother would do and pulled out one of her poop bags and began to try and pull the thing off of her. Oh- one important thing you should know- Izzy is not ok with anyone touching her butt. Not even a cheek. Not even ME- her mother! She throws a hissy-fit every time. So as I’m joisting her up on my shoulder, trying to get a better look at her butt, she’s freaking out and making noises like I have three cats in my arms that are all fighting with each other. People are walking by and making faces at me as though I’m hurting her or something.
Oh please, as if!
Finally, a couple of women double back my way again and offer help. Oh- another important thing to know- Izzy doesn’t like strangers and she’ll let you know that. So things got worse and the sounds of three cats fighting in my arms escalated into I-don’t-know-what but she even scared them! I let them know that Izzy is a little different, afraid of others and doesn’t want her butt to be touched. Realizing that they still had no idea why Izzy was freaking out so much, I finally let them know that I was trying to remove one of those stupid ticks from her hiney.
So I realize that the tick is now on my arm and so I quickly brush it off with another small scream. Ick. At least it’s off of her, right? That’s all I wanted.
We resume our walk back home (yeah- I’m calling it quits for the walk- a tick ruined our time!) and as she’s walking in front of me I notice the damn tick again on her right butt-cheek! I never got it off of her! Oh hell… here we go again!
Poop bag out and her up on my shoulder… she’s throwing a fit and I’m trying to use a calming tone to get her to relax (good one!). I can’t get that bugger off of her! I set her back down and we start running like mad towards home. Why? I don’t know- so I can call the police to come and help me or something???
I pick her up a couple of more times and try again and again to remove it- and finally I was able to. Holy cow- I’m never going outside with her again!
Ps- I use Frontline and I also have another body spray that is supposed to detract fleas and ticks (and I just put that body spray on her before we walked out the door).
I haven’t seen another tick on her since that time (and believe me, that girl gets a thorough look-over a few times a day- poor thing) until last night. And I found FOUR. FOUR!!
We just started our walk and I found on on her shoulder. I was able to get it off of her right away but then my paranoia set in and I made us turn around and go back home. Then inside I gave her a thorough ‘pat down’ to see if she had any more on her and luckily she didn’t.
Until about 30 minutes later. She was chewing on her bone, minding her own business, when I saw something on her chest. WHAT THE? I grabbed a kleenex and grabbed it and then noticed she had two more on her chest as well! EEK!
I was able to remove them all very quickly but let me tell ya, if I had children, they’d live in a bubble because that’s basically what’s happening to Izzy right now- I’m scared to death of her getting ticks!
Now that I’m done ranting about my ordeal, here is a link to an article about Ticks and Lyme Disease so that you can pay attention for sign and symptoms in your dog. Damn things.
Thanks to Animal Kingdom Vet Care in North Liberty, Iowa for this informative article! It eased my worries and it also scared the crap out of me!
I’m appreciative nonetheless!

I’m sooo excited! I never win anything! Tonight I attended the very first #warmbellies Twitter Party hosted by @Andrea_Arden @Petfinder_fnd, Steven Spitz and @darafoster.
It was a packed party, loaded with lots of giveaways and great conversation! People were asking expert dog trainer Andrea Arden for tips on training their dogs, others were asking Dara Foster for fashion advice! Steven Spitz was also there, offering his expertise on the best type of food to feed your pets.
So what did I win? I have no idea! I feel like I’ve won the lottery, though! This is so exciting! They were giving away prizes every ten minutes! GET OUT! I know, right? Here are some of the fun items they were giving away:
1. Petfinder Foundation T-Shirts, stickers and bracelets (I’d be happy with any of those- including the stickers!)
2. PetHub ScruffTag Collars, Link Tags and memberships (which I’ve been meaning to purchase so this would be awesome to win!)
3. Life & Dog 1-year subscription (I subscribe via email but who doesn’t love to have pet magazines laying around the house?)
4. P.L.A.Y. Chill Pads (pads for your dog to lay on- “chill out” – in super fun colors!)
5. $200 Gift Certificate towards a P.L.A.Y. pet bed from Big Apple Pet Supply (AWESOME! You really should go to this site because they have an AH-mazing selection of pet beds!)
Is this insane or what?!?!?! My first Twitter party and I come away a WINNER! I’ll let you all know what it is that I won as soon as I know! I need a drink of water… all of this excitement has me panting hard!
But HUGE thanks to PetHub, PetFinder Foundation, Andrea Arden, Dara Foster, Life and Dog, Pet Play SF and Steven Spitz! I feel so honored to have been a part of your first Twitter Party and look forward to many more! Thanks for loving pets so much that you’ve dedicated your career to improving their quality of life, making them healthy, stylish and comfortable! I love you!
With much gratitude,

This is a blog post from the French Bulldog Rescue Network Blog - I got so excited about the possibility of it that I had to share with you! -Juli
Take a look at this article describing a new drug currently in trials in Texas. French bulldogs are among the breeds that most commonly suffer disc disease or spinal cord injury.
The drug has been quite successful in mice, and offeres hope to dogs prone to spine-injured dogs, particularly those with disc injuries.
The key is immediate treatment.
If your dog suffers from an injury and/or exhibits symptoms of pain- slow to move, panting, whimpering, unwilling to lift his head, or he loses mobility- even if you can’t get this drug, the secret to a full recovery is immediate treatment.
Remy uses his cart to go to the dog park and play.
Do not wait to see if the dog gets better. Go to your vet or the ER vet immediately.
Spinal injuries can be very expensive to treat, and they often include MRIs and surgery.
We recommend that Frenchie owners carry dog pet insurance, so owners are never faced with the suggestion of enthanizing their dog if he is injured.
Thanks to the handsome Remy and the fair Tinkerbell for providing photos for our readers and the Frog Princess.

This would be a blessing!
Some of you are familiar with a blog that I follow called Our Oslo. He’s the cutest little French Bulldog with Intervertebral Disc Disease. I’m amazed at his courage and strength but I’m also amazed at the courage and strength that his parents have! Check out the blog- you will fall in love with it and the photography is unbelievable! Here’s a picture of Oslo and his sibling, Jersey- an adorable pair!

In this next picture, Oslo lays on his hot water bottle for extra TLC.

This is a picture of Oslo after his spinal surgery (yeeouch!):

I also have a friend in Iowa City who’s Miniature Dachshund has Intervertebral Disc Disease. Hegel does not yet have a cart to tool around in but I believe it’s on the horizon for him! Below is a picture of Hegel getting some acupuncture done. This was sometime after his surgery in 2011. I guess he liked having this done and was a very good boy! Yeah, Hegel!
