To all pet owners who have a lost pet, if you have lost a pet please go and check all of the shelters on a every other day basis. We lost our shepard in december supposedly he was picked up and takin to the macomb co animal control, upon arriving to claim him they could not find any paperwork on him or our dog??? thinking that maybe the person got the facility confused with another one ,we called all surrounding shelters/and pounds,no jake? We arrived back home then my wife got a phone call from “sue” the suupervisor at the macomb facility and she stated that jake was indeed brought in there and was put down because he was being aggresive towards office staff! and that she found the paperwork. We are now looking for an attorney that will help us out on this. also when arriving at the facility all office staff were acting like they had never seen our dog between like 5-6 people and no one remembered seeing jake a purebreed shepard??????? somebody is covering something up!! so if you have a missing pet and you call and are told your certain breed is not there,DONT BELIEVE THEM GO LOOK TRUST ME! there are to many unanswered questions about this situation so we will contact an attorney to resoive this matter and if nothing else,to see what we can do about these “kill” shelters! and after digging a little deeper we also discovered that they violated 2 codes and possibly more? we cannot afford an attorney but i will beg, borrow,or steal to get one we are extremely furious and will get to the bottom of this. Please once again,do not azsume these shelters are telling you the truth. thank you for reading.

Another post from the same Facebook page:

WRITE A LETTER AND LET HER KNOW THAT JAKE MATTERED!!!! Directors email Macomb Co A.S( Sue.Jeroue@macombcountymi.gov )

CHANGE only happens when we stand up and make a loud noise. Think about that, between all of the lost and found pages there are probably over 10,000 of us. This is not an isolated mistake this crap happens all the time and could happen to anyone looking for their missing dog at any shelter!!!

  1. This what the shelter had to say…

    Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to everyone to who emailed me and/or Sue Jeroue and/or others at Macomb County regarding a missing German Shepherd named “Jake”.

I know that each of you took the trouble to write because you are genuinely concerned for the welfare of animals. I respect those feelings and assure you that they are shared by everyone who works at the Macomb County Animal Shelter. The Animal Shelter staff handle up to 10,000 animals each year, animals which arrive at the Animal Shelter because other human beings have failed to keep or were unable to keep their animals safe and secure.

I regret the misinformation which has been posted on Facebook and in other places on the Internet, and I am glad to be able to share accurate, factual information with all of you:

First, and most important, there is NO evidence that Jake was ever at the Macomb County Animal Shelter. Only two German Shepherds were at the Animal Shelter between December 20, which was when Jake crawled through a hole in his fence, and January 27, more than five weeks later, when Jake’s owner first contacted the Shelter because of information posted on Craig’s List. That same day, January 27, Jake’s owner was invited to come to the Shelter to visually inspect every animal there. She did that, and confirmed that the one German Shepherd we had was not Jake.

The other German Shepherd had been brought to the Shelter on January 19. It was held for the full seven-day period required by law, during which no one called or came in looking for a German Shepherd. Our veterinarian found that dog to be too aggressive for adoption, and it was euthanized on January 26. The animal we euthanized had no collar or tag – nothing that the Shelter could have used to get in touch with the dog’s owner. (We have heard that Jake was wearing a choke collar with tags when he was lost.)

When we informed Jake’s owner that we had euthanized a German Shepherd on the 26th, she concluded that it must have been Jake, although there is no way to know whether that dog was Jake or not.

So: Contrary to the impression you may have been given, there is no evidence that Jake was euthanized by us, or that he was ever at our Animal Shelter. Our records are accurate, and they document that the German Shepherd we euthanized was held for seven days. Our staff cooperated fully with Jake’s owner once she contacted us.

Thank you for your interest in and advocacy for animals
