Our two-year-old Boston, Charlie, was recently attacked by my boyfriend’s roommate’s dog. While it could’ve been much worse, he still managed to bite Charlie’s face, removing his eye from its socket, and puncturing the eyeball itself. The doctor now thinks Charlie will be able to keep his eye, but will most likely not be able to see from it again. His eye is stitched shut at the moment to heal, but it’s possible that when the stitches are removed, he will no longer be able to close it completely, requiring a $2,000 surgery to reduce the size of the opening. With the cost of the initial visit to the eye specialist and the follow-up appointments, this is going to set us back several thousand dollars.
We generally like to keep a pretty decent cushion of savings for emergencies like this, but this happened at probably the most inopportune time. My boyfriend quit his job in June to move from Missouri to California to begin school this August. He has yet
to find another place to work and still has to cover his school costs for this semester. He’s also decided to find a new place to live, so as to avoid any future contact with his roommate’s dog. All of this has exhausted our savings and now, well, we’re broke.
